Position

The copy director is the voice of the Brand. He or she creates a compelling brand voice that distinguishes the company in a crowded marketplace and that sells products. While leading the copy staff, the copy director maintains and evolves this brand voice.

Responsibilities and Skills

  • Define or refine the company's brand voice in alignment with senior managements vision
  • Create writing guidelines for the copy staff. These guidelines explain what the voice sounds like and why it should sound like that.
  • Lead the team in brainstorming on strategic initiatives ranging from seasonal concepts to quick turnaround market response projects
  • Write copy for all channels (catalog, web, retail, corporate) and any other marketing materials
  • Work with creative partners to continually explore fresh ways to drive sales and to enhance the company's brand image
  • Collaborate with merchandisers to ensure that product copy is accurate and effective
  • Partner with designers to ensure copy and design complement and elevate one another
  • Seek, hire, supervise, and develop writers and proofreaders
  • Ensure the Copy team delivers on schedule
  • Help create a culture of team pride, team spirit, high standards, and continuous improvement

Requirements

  • Proven ability to write copy that sells clothes, preferably in a catalog
  • Minimum ten years of writing and editing experience, with at least three years in copy management
  • A strategic thinker
  • A swift writer
  • A decisive and incisive editor
  • Calm under pressure
  • Able to lead a team with a balance of guidance and delegation
  • Mac-proficient in Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign
