The Company

Our client is a leading educational publisher of nationally recognized and acclaimed products that focus on areas such as public health, school success, and prevention science. Their publications are sold through 1) direct sales and 2) direct marketing — which encompasses direct mail, email and the Web — to school systems, healthcare organizations, government agencies, and community service organizations.

The Position

Our client seeks an energetic, talented, and experienced Senior Direct Marketing Manager to define and execute direct marketing (postal mail, email, the Web) strategies with bottom line responsibility in a high volume mail (and email) environment.

Responsibilities

  • To meet or exceed sales and profitability targets while managing costs.
  • To develop and implement direct mail and email action plans that include
    • testing (lists, creative, segmentation, timing, offers)
    • timing of campaigns
    • market segmentation and list analysis
    • management of creative process working with an in-house agency
    • management of associated budgets
    • extensive results and P&L analysis
  • To help make the Web an increasingly successful selling tool.
  • To work closely with DM staff and other departments to ensure successful execution of approximately
    • 300 discrete mail campaigns averaging approximately 3,200 pieces
    • 200 discrete email campaigns totaling 3-4 million emails.
  • To prepare the assigned portion of the annual Marketing Plan and budget.
  • To research and initiate new creative approaches to list selection, market segmentation and mailing pieces.
  • To advocate for new products based on analysis and customer feedback.
  • To provide clear and concise monthly/quarterly/annual sales analysis and review of variance versus budgets, goals, and prior year's results.
  • To maintain knowledge of assigned markets (particularly buyer motivations) through direct contact with DM customers, surveys, reading, web research, and attendance at conventions and conferences.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5-7 years experience in direct marketing or marketing and sales.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups in person and over the phone.
  • Proficiency in mathematics and analysis.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
