I am writing to compliment Victoria James on an excellent piece of writing (Career Busters, DIRECT, April).

I work with the direct marketing group at Western Union International. We had some severe reorganizations in 2001, as a result of which there sometimes tends to be stress in our daily working relationships. I have personally tried to address some of my discomfort by using Habit One from Steven Covey's book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” by responding proactively to negative stimuli. In doing so, I developed certain response mechanisms which are along similar lines to what appears in the Career Busters column. However, I was not completely sure if these response mechanisms were completely valid.

The article does a great job of explaining the rationale behind certain response options and helps me feel great about my choice of responses. With an endorsement coming from an authority like Victoria James, I feel highly confident in my choices. The practical application tips she suggests are just great.
